š¢Video Breakdown
I start by asking what kind of guitar play do you want to be? Are you going to be the next Slash, or do you just want to strum chords in your bedroom? Both are admirable goals but theyāre also very different goals, only you can truly know what kind of guitar player you want to be so thatās the question you should answer first of all. You also need to understand the difference between where you are now and where you want to go which takes me nicely onto the second point.
Next I tell you that you need to know how to make a practice routine and that this should be based around exactly who you want to be as a guitar player. I say that even if you already have a routine, you should have a look over it and refine it somewhat. Practising correctly and not wrongly is also essential to your long term success. And donāt forget, different players who want different outcomes will have to practice things differently according to their goals!
Then I say that no amount of practice routine is going to get you there and to take some time to actually schedule this into your calendar. If itās an electronic calendar, set a reminder so it pops up at the time of day you intend to practice. Then, once booked in I say that you should stick to it like your life depends on it! If you find youāre struggling for time, think about the amount of hours you spend scrolling social media or watching streaming services, this is time you could be getting your 30 minutes practice per day.
The next portion of the video talks about how you must also stay consistent with your routine. I know that life is busy and guitar playing is somewhat of a luxury but donāt let your practice session slip if you want to get ahead of other beginner guitar players. If you have holidays booked, consider getting a travel guitar, this might sound extreme but it will get you ahead. You will have to periodically kick yourself up the āyou know whatā and just do the work.
Then I suggest revamping your routine every couple of months; itās a good idea to sit and change your routine to stop it getting stale. If youāve been putting in the consistent practice, you should be seeing some results and now actually be able to do some of the chords, scales or songs youāve set for yourself so now is the time to look at replacing what you already know with things that you donāt. If you can do all of the above for 6 - 12 months, that is how you get ahead!
Lastly, I finish with my own personal Mantra on getting better at guitar that I share with my 1-2-1 students, and that is, it takes Months & Years, not Days & Weeks, itās a long term thing so keep on going!
